My scholarship investigates the ramifications of welfare retrenchment for marginalized populations. Drawing on literature in political sociology, migration, citizenship theory, and racial and ethnic relations, I work to explain the ways in which we construct belonging and exclusion in a market-driven world. I examine the methods employed by the state to discourage rebellion. By looking at phenomena as diverse as separatist movements, human trafficking, and incarceration, my work investigates the changing character of the state and the citizen.
My peer-reviewed research has been published in The Sociological Quarterly, Citizenship Studies, Sociology Compass, Studies in Conflict and Terrorism, and other academic journals. It has been featured in The Nation and online. I have given talks on my research at the University of Warwick and the University of Puerto Rico, where I was a visiting research fellow.
